Quilters You Should Know

About That LaNelle Herron . . .

Tenacious, perfectionest, strong, to the point, a leader with a no fear attitude and a mind for business. She is also kind, giving, caring and loves her family very much. She has it all. Because of she all these qualities, La Nelle can be a little intimidating when you do business with her.  Bottom line is she just wants her quilts quilted perfectly, that’s all.

La Nelle lived 8 of her adult years in Ohio, moved to Texas, built a home, then transferred with her husband (Sam) to Taichung Taiwan (I can’t even say this) for two years and then back to Texas for good. Since moving here she has gotten involved with the church, TVQG, a quilting Bee and owns her own business. Her business is called Red Hats And Stuff, located in Burleson.

Obviously they did not have TV’s in Ohio? Look at this list of kids and grandkids. I’ll start with the kids, Jim, Ron, Scott, Julie, Amy, LeAnn, and Jennifer. Now the grandkids, Brittony, Kayleign, Jordan, Cutter James, Jared, Sydney Noelle, Alex, Justina, Chelsa. WOW, What a crew!

Her quilting and sewing started with her grandmother, Mrs. Della (what a pretty name). Mrs. Della had a quilting rack hanging from a spare bedroom of her home and from time to time would have friends over and they would lower the rack and begin quilting, all except for La Nelle. La Nelle would climb under the rack and cause havoc for everyone. Her grandmother would coax her out from under the rack and give some material and a needle and thread and instruct her to sew doll cloths. However La Nelle didn’t sew doll cloths (too complicated) but instead made doll quilts. Thus it began. Her grandmother also taught La Nelle to be resourceful. They would use paper templates for cutting out patterns. Della would make her granddaughter arranged each template perfectly on the fabric so that there would be no waste of material. Like the rest of us La Nelle started a family and had little or no time for such things as quilting. She did manage, when her boys were young and with the help of a friend, to put together two Log Cabin quilts. Her sons used them for many years. After making theses quilts La Nelle didn’t get another opportunity to quilt until moving back to Texas for the second time.

Linda Sullivan and La Nelle met at church and a friendship began. Linda taught quilting classes and got La Nelle interest in quilting again. Linda also suggested that La Nelle and class join a guild. The guild was called Trinity Valley Quilters Guild.  La Nelle joined in 1990 and since then La Nelle has taken on a variety of duties within the guild. She started out serving as Property Manager, responsible for getting equipment to the annual quilt show. She did this for 2 years. Then she became President, Board Secretary, Publicity Chair, and is currently dispensing advertisements and press releases ( 2006 TVQG Show will be September 15,16,17). It never ends for La Nelle because she really enjoys the guild and all of here quilting friends. All of the experiences have been worth it.

Quilting lets her be creative and to use her imagination. She claims there are no rules for her to quilt by and maybe that is why she has a passion for scrappy quilts.  She has fun putting them together. She also enjoys incorporating embroidery in her quilts and wants to master appliqué’. For La Nelle there is no end to quilting. She has lots of plans and idea’s and wants to use them all. KEEP ON QUILTIN’!
